About the University of Kentucky The University of Kentucky, a comprehensive Research I University with a large Medical Center, is located in Lexington, Kentucky in the heart of the Bluegrass Region. Lexington is one of the three major population centers in the area (Cincinnati and Louisville are each within 75 miles) and has an increasingly diverse population. Over the last several years, the College of Arts and Sciences has placed the issue of diversity and equity at the forefront of its agenda. The College community has defined diversity widely, pressing for greater exposure and understanding of differences in race, ethnicity, gender, geography, sexual orientation, religion and creed, and physical ability. Similarly, the College emphasizes research and collaborative partnerships within diverse settings as well as preparing students to work in and with diverse populations and communities. Student enrollment at the University of Kentucky exceeds 27,000 with a total faculty of about 1,900. The Department of Chemistry currently has 27 faculty members and offers B.S., B.A., M.S., and Ph. D. degree programs and has extensive research programs in analytical, biological, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry. In addition, many of our faculty have active collaborations with colleagues in other departments and colleges, including the Colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy, Engineering, Agriculture, the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging, and the Center for Applied Energy Research. Job Description We expect to make two appointments at the Assistant Professor level in the area of Biological Chemistry with a starting date of August 2010. Applications at the Associate or Full Professor level may be considered in exceptional cases. We are seeking candidates who will develop a strong, nationally and internationally recognized interdisciplinary research program that combines Biological Chemistry with other areas of research. Preference will be given to candidates with a research emphasis on biofuels/renewable energy, synthetic organic or inorganic chemistry related to biological phenomena, environmental chemistry or other areas that complement existing departmental strengths. Successful candidates should be dedicated to excellence in teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. These positions were created through the Research Challenge Trust Fund (“Bucks for Brains”), an outcome of the 1997 Kentucky Postsecondary Education Improvement Act. The RCTF program provides a strategic investment in the University of Kentucky, University of Louisville and Kentucky’s six regional universities. The RCTF program is administered by the Council on Postsecondary Education and is designed to advance the economic success of Kentucky and its citizens through education and research.
