Assistant Professor, Tenure-Track

Chemistry Department, University of San Francisco

Job Summary:

The Department of Chemistry at University of San Francisco (www.usfca.edu) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Inorganic Chemistry faculty position at the Assistant Professor level to begin in August 2018. We seek an enthusiastic colleague to join our ACS-certified department in which we offer degree tracks in traditional, biochemistry and medicinal/synthetic chemistry, plus a thesis-based MS degree.

The University of San Francisco is a Catholic-Jesuit institution that blends the liberal arts and professional preparation, emphasizing quality teaching and student learning. The University serves a diverse group of students on a residential campus near Golden Gate Park. The Lo Schiavo Science Center is home to our four new undergraduate teaching labs and the department is supported by a full-time stockroom manager, organic lab coordinator/NMR manager, instrumentation specialists and a science safety officer.

Job Responsibilities:

Initial teaching duties will include general chemistry, foundational inorganic chemistry and development of an in-depth inorganic course with other colleagues. In addition, the successful candidate will teach and develop curricula based on best practices in chemical education, participate in departmental governance, serve the university community, and maintain an active research program that engages students. The research area can be any laboratory-based program in inorganic chemistry; proposals that emphasize BS/MS student research projects and demonstrate potential for external funding will merit particular consideration. Candidates with multidisciplinary backgrounds, especially in chemical education, are strongly encouraged to apply.

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Chemistry. A strong record of teaching at the university level, evidence of scholarship, and an understanding of and commitment to support the mission of the University of San Francisco are required. Candidates must be able to teach and conduct research in a primarily undergraduate institution. Postdoctoral experience is highly desired. The department encourages a student-centered teaching environment with small research groups involving both BS and MS students.

Candidates should submit their application materials electronically to https://gnosis.usfca.edu/search, including a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of teaching philosophy/practice that explicitly address the candidate’s approach to teaching general and inorganic chemistry, summary of research plans, graduate transcripts, and three letters of recommendation. Review of applications will begin October 1, 2017. Questions may be directed to the search committee chair at ChemistrySearch@usfca.edu.
