Education and Experience

Faculty members are expected to demonstrate excellent teaching ability and a track record of (or strong potential for) scholarly work. Individuals with broad research interests in chemistry or biochemistry will be considered, with a minor preference given to those who can teach one or more of the following: biochemistry or computational chemistry. Successful candidates will either have 1) a PhD or other terminal degree in a chemistry-related field, or 2) a master’s degree in a chemistry-related field and five or more years of applicable experience. The department seeks persons who have a passion for teaching undergraduates, a desire to establish a research program involving undergraduates, and an active interest in integrating faith and science.

Desirable: post-doctoral experience, experience teaching undergraduates, evidence of scholarly activity and potential for acquiring external research funding.

Faith and Educational Commitment

1. Commitment to the educational mission of Calvin College as a Christian liberal arts college affiliated with the Christian Reformed Church.

2. A commitment to the Christian faith and to the integration of faith, learning, and student development.

Diversity Commitment

Demonstrated awareness and commitment to effectively establishing relationships and positive communication across multiple dimensions of diversity including, but not limited to, race, gender, physical limitations, class, or religious perspectives.

FACULTY RESPONSIBILITIES

Faculty members in the sciences typically teach two course sections and at least one lab section in each of the fall and spring semesters as well as a single January interim course. Faculty is also expected to advise students, establish an individual or collaborative research program that involves undergraduates, and to serve on college and departmental committees.

FACULTY RESOURCES

Calvin has a number of internal funding opportunities to support faculty teaching and research programs. Resources include course releases, summer research stipends, travel funds, and student research opportunities (for more information see: http://www.calvin.edu/admin/provost/scholars/).

ABOUT THE CHEMISTRY & BIOCHEMISTRY PROGRAM

In addition, each of these majors can be augmented with a concentration in Neuroscience or expanded into an ACS Accredited major, all within a vigorous liberal arts context. We are committed to both excellent teaching and vibrant research with undergraduates. We seek to build on highly successful record of garnering external and internal funding to support our facilities, equipment, and research.
