The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign is seeking to fill multiple tenured or tenure track faculty positions in all ranks. Candidates with research interest in the broad areas of materials science and engineering, materials physics, materials chemistry or biomaterials are welcome to apply. Successful applicants are expected to initiate and sustain a vigorous research program and have strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching.
To be considered, applicants must provide a curriculum vitae that includes a list of publications, their teaching experience and interests, and a synopsis of a proposed program of research. Candidates for tenure-track positions must provide names and contact information for three letters of reference. Candidates for tenured positions must have achieved national and international recognition for their scholarship; selected candidates will be contacted to provide references.
The Department of MSE at Illinois has a long tradition of excellence in materials research and teaching. The Department presently has 22 faculty and approximately 400 undergraduate and 200 graduate students, with highly ranked graduate and undergraduate programs. The research portfolio covers soft and hard materials, biomaterials, and computational materials science. Extensive state-of-the-art characterization and nanofabrication facilities are housed on campus in the Frederick Seitz Materials Research Laboratory, the micro and nanotechnology laboratory and the Beckman Institute. The Materials Research Laboratory just underwent a major infrastructure innovation and instrument acquisitions. The campus also hosts exceptional computational facilities, including the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, and the National Petascale Computing Facility.
At the time of appointment, applicants must hold an earned doctorate in an appropriate field. Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications. The proposed starting date for these positions is August 16, 2018.

Qualified senior candidates will be considered for endowed professorships and chairs as part of the Grainger Engineering Breakthroughs Initiative, which is backed by a $100-million gift from the Grainger Foundation. Over the next few years, more than 35 new endowed professorships and chairs will be established.
