The Opportunity

The College of Engineering at North Carolina State University (NC State) invites applications for the position of Department Head and Professor of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE). The successful applicant will have experience and demonstrable skills in leading and managing programs and people reflective of those found within research-extensive universities. The Head will have a proven record of accomplishment of working effectively with faculty, students, staff, administration, industry, alumni, departmental partners, and funding agencies. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential to success. The successful candidate will be expected to have a strong commitment to academic and research excellence, commensurate with the expectations of a major research university.

About the Department

MSE is currently composed of 27 tenure/tenure-track faculty, two of whom have been hired in the last three years. The Department houses six centers and has traditional strengths in electronic materials, structural materials and technology transfer, with emerging expertise in biological materials, computational materials, magnetic materials, as well as interdisciplinary nanotechnology. The faculty have many honors, including 3 members of the National Academy of Engineering, 3 members of the National Academy of Inventors, and many Society Fellows (e. g. MRS, TMS, APS, etc.). There are about 145 undergraduate, 120 Ph.D, and 30 on-line MMSE students in the department. Annual research expenditures are over $13 million.

The Department is seeking an outstanding individual who will be expected to have a strong commitment to academic and research excellence commensurate with the expectations of a major research university.

Candidates shall possess a doctoral degree in materials science and engineering or a related field and credentials to be appointed at the rank of Professor with tenure in the department. The successful candidate will possess an outstanding record of leadership, teaching, and research accomplishments along with a strong record of commitment to diversity.

Candidates should have experience and demonstrable skills in leading and managing programs and people, reflective of those found within research-extensive universities. He/she must have a track record of working effectively with faculty, students, staff, administration, industry, alumni, departmental partners and funding agencies.
