The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of Queens College of the City University of New York (CUNY) invites applications for a full-time position at the rank of tenure-track Assistant Professor to start Fall 2018. We seek to recruit the best available candidate in any branch of physical chemistry, in particular with expertise in spectroscopy, dynamics, and energy science. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an externally-funded research program while at the same time contributing to the Department’s mission of excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and masters level, as well as teaching in the appropriate Ph.D. programs at the Graduate Center of CUNY.

Queens College offers a rigorous education in the liberal arts and sciences under the guidance of a faculty dedicated to both teaching and research. The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers American Chemical Society-certified undergraduate majors in Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Chemistry Education. At the graduate level the department offers an MA program in Chemistry and participates in the CUNY Graduate Center Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Physics Ph.D. programs. The Department currently has 13 faculty members, almost all of whom have active research programs involving postdoctorals, Ph.D. students, and masters and undergraduate students. In recent years two faculty members have been awarded NSF CAREER grants in Physical Chemistry. Research labs are located in new and renovated space in two adjacent buildings. Departmental equipment includes two NMR spectrometers (400 and 500 MHz), a single-crystal X-ray diffractometer, time-resolved FT-IR, mass spectrometers, and a variety of other shared equipment and computer clusters. A competitive start-up package providing support for equipment, supplies, and personnel will be provided. More information about the department may be found at http://www.qc.cuny.edu/Academics/Degrees/DMNS/Chemistry.

Queens College is located on an 80-acre tree-lined campus surrounding a traditional quad with a view of the Manhattan skyline, 10 miles away. Over 600 full-time faculty members teach about 19,000 students at the undergraduate and masters levels. Science faculty on campus are active in the University’s Ph.D. programs, and faculty members in the Department interact with chemistry faculty throughout CUNY, which has 18 four-year and two-year campuses in New York City.  Candidates with demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusiveness through their research, teaching and/or service are also encouraged to apply.

Ph.D. degree or equivalent in chemistry or related areas, postdoctoral experience preferred.  Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement in the targeted research areas, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

CUNY offers a competitive compensation and benefits package to its faculty, covering health insurance, pension and retirement benefits, paid parental leave, and savings programs.  We also provide mentoring and support for research, scholarship, and publication as part of our commitment to ongoing faculty professional development.
