Westfield State University seeks a visionary, collaborative, and dynamic leader to serve as its Founding Dean of the College of Mathematics and Sciences. This is a momentous time to join the Westfield community as it welcomes three founding deans to help achieve great aspirations for the future.
Founded in 1838, Westfield State University is a comprehensive, four-year public university in Westfield, Massachusetts. Launched by Horace Mann, a noted educator and social reformer, Westfield was established as the first public, co-educational college in America to exist without barrier to race, gender, or economic class. Enrolling 5,000 undergraduates, 600 part-time students, and 800 graduate students, Westfield strives to foster intellectual curiosity, encourage critical thinking, inspire civic engagement, and promote a global perspective.
As the chief executive and academic officer for the newly created College of Mathematics and Sciences, the Dean is responsible for: budgeting and resource management; the recruitment and retention of staff and faculty; curriculum review and program development; sustaining enrollment; and the overall vitality and long-term success of the College. The chairs of the following six departments report to the Dean: Biology; Chemical and Physical Sciences; Computer and Information Science; Environmental Science; Mathematics; and Psychology. The Dean will report to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Parviz Ansari, and will step into this role alongside two additional founding Deans.
This new leader must engage a wide variety of University and community stakeholders to develop and advance a unified vision for the College, while maintaining its status as an integral part of the University. The founding Dean will: develop, implement, and operationalize a strategic plan and vision for the College; steward close-knit internal partnerships and collaborations; foster and enhance external relationships; expand and manage the College's financial, space, and human resources; and support and grow a vibrant and diverse internal community. This leader must have a PhD in a relevant field within the disciplines within the College and experience working within a unionized environment.
