Postdoctoral Research Staff Member - Machine Learning

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

Science and Technology on a Mission!

For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research on machine learning (ML) approaches for chemical reactivity of organic materials under extreme conditions. You will actively work on research involving the creation of ML potentials for molecular dynamics simulation based on high-level quantum calculations to identify and understand self-assembly in carbon-rich energetic materials under dynamic and static loading. This position is in the Reaction Dynamics Group of the Materials Science Division.

Essential Duties

- Perform quantum calculations and develop ML based models for organic materials under ambient and extreme conditions.

- Interpret long timescale reaction dynamics observed in experiments on reactive systems.

- Document and publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars and/or technical meetings.

- Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design and execution of research to address defined problems.

- Collaborate with scientists in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.

- Pursue independent but complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.

- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Recent PhD in physics, chemistry, materials science, or related field.

- Experience in first-principles simulation techniques of condensed phases.

- Experience in programming in C++, Fortran 95, or an equivalent high-level language.

- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact with members of a research team, author technical and scientific reports and papers, and deliver technical presentations.

- Publication record in peer-reviewed journals.

- Initiative and interpersonal skills with desire and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.

Desired Qualifications

- Knowledge of a scripting language.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.

Security Clearance:  None required.

Note:   This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.  Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
