Postdoctoral synthetic medicinal chemist
University of São Paulo
Institute of Chemistry of São Carlos, São Carlos/SP, Brazil
Scholarship: ca. USD 25,824.11 (or equivalence to Brazilian Real R$ 86,097.60)
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral synthetic medicinal chemist to join the team led by Prof. Carlos Montanari at the University of São Paulo. The objective of the São Paulo Research Foundation – FAPESP theme project is the discovery of novel cysteine protease inhibitors for the treatment of Chagas disease, which is caused by the Trypanosoma cruzi parasite and is endemic in South and Central Americas. Chagas disease is currently only remediable in the acute phase and the drugs used have insufferable side effects so the position represents an excellent opportunity to make important contributions in the area of neglected tropical diseases. Beyond that, proteases are important in many signaling pathways and are potential drug targets for diseases ranging from cardiovascular disorders to cancer. Although the development of new drugs that act on proteases maybe hampered by selectivity, the possibility of contributing to the therapeutic advancement of new protease drugs is challenging.
The candidate should have expertise in organic synthesis mostly related to synthetic medicinal chemistry.
The post is funded by FAPESP, and is available immediately for 12 months with the possibility of extension for a further 12 months. The successful candidate must have a PhD in organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry or chemical biology. The workplace will be at the Medicinal Chemistry Group of the Institute of Chemistry of São Carlos, University of São Paulo, NEQUIMED/IQSC/USP, Avenida Trabalhador Sancarlense, 400, zip code 13566-590 (Latitude -22.005367, Longitude -47.898250), São Carlos/SP, Brazil
The expiring time for applications is 11.59 pm on 25th of January 2018 and Skype interviews will be held as soon as possible thereafter. Candidates will be required to upload a supporting statement and CV as part of application. Please apply by email to Prof Carlos Montanari (Carlos.Montanari@usp.br) including your CV and name two researchers who can offer letters of recommendation, with their respective e-mail addresses and affiliations.
