Physical Science Technician
Count Room Technician with the United States Air Force Technical Applications Center (AFTAC) at Patrick AFB in FL. This position works to support national-level materials monitoring programs by analyzing samples via gamma spectrometry, gas flow proportional counting, alpha spectrometry, and liquid scintillation counting.
Responsibilities and Duties
The major duties of this position will include: selecting appropriate measurement approach for identifying targeted radionuclides; maintaining and calibrating analytical instrumentation and performing quality control checks; recording and documenting all measurement, maintenance and daily activities; communicating activities to management entities as well as coordinating activities across laboratory departments; adhere to and maintain safe work practices according to established control procedures; manage sample receipt, handling, and disposition throughout the lab.
Qualifications and Skills
It is preferred that the candidate have a minimum of an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in a technical field, but it is not required if work experience supports the skillset needs for this position.
Direct experience working in an analytical laboratory is desired.
Knowledge of alpha, beta, and gamma measurement equipment and the principles, techniques, processes, procedures associated with the use of that equipment to include radioactive decay schemes, and radiation detection systems.
Knowledge of radiochemistry, separation and purification techniques, analytical chemical techniques tracer and carrier techniques, and instrumental chemical techniques.
Knowledge of mathematical statistical methods for reduction and comparison of measurement data.
Skill in rapidly applying knowledge in a variety of situations to a variety of sample measurements in order to meet critical deadlines.
PCS will be paid by the organization in accordance with JTR Vol 2 and applicable Air Force regulations

Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret Clearance with access to Sensitive Compartmented Information. US Citizenship is required for security clearances.

This is an AFTAC civilian position and is part of the Air Force Civilian Service .
