Princeton University's Office of Communications seeks a dynamic and versatile communications professional to serve as a Communications Strategist. Reporting to the Director of Communications Strategy, the communications strategist will support the objectives and priorities of multiple University academic departments and centers looking to expand their communications capacity.

The communications strategist will be based in the Office of Communications and work collaboratively with units across the natural and computer sciences. The strategist will work closely with staff housed in those areas to develop content and strategies that reach their key audiences with messages and stories that raise their visibility and reinforce Princeton's reputation for excellence in research and teaching.

Please note this is a two-year, benefits-eligible term position.

Representative communications responsibilities include, but will not be limited to:

  • Writing high-quality content tailored to departments'/centers' channels and audiences, with special emphasis on science writing and research translation;
  • Overseeing print and electronic production and dissemination of newsletters, brochures and other publications;
  • Applying smart, strategic communications approaches to achieve departments'/centers' respective goals;
  • Managing social media outreach across relevant platforms;
  • Coordinating with the Office of Communications, Office of the Dean for Research and others to share ideas and content with broader communications potential.

Other responsibilities may include promoting events, taking compelling photos and videos, executing successful e-mail marketing efforts, and applying basic design principles within commonly used web publishing environments.

The communications strategist must function as an effective liaison among department/center staff, faculty members, students and others to develop steady streams of compelling content that can appear online, in print, or both. The strategist will help take the communications efforts of individual departments and centers to higher levels, while also serving as a bridge to central University communications to help surface important stories that Princeton may promote via its core channels.

Essential Qualifications: Bachelor's degree, with educational background in the sciences strongly preferred. 5+ years' experience in communications or related field. Deep science writing experience. Demonstrated leadership in developing and implementing communications strategies. Exceptional oral and written communications skills, with experience writing and translating research for lay audiences.

Versatility and flexibility is essential, as this position requires the strategist to divide time and attention across multiple units throughout the University. Attention to detail and customer service are key. Ability to prioritize and juggle responsibilities, meet tight deadlines and work on multiple projects simultaneously. Organized and expert problem-solver. Creativity and curiosity in approaching assignments. Self-motivated with ability to work independently and also as part of multiple teams. Ability to constructively edit others' work. Proven success in managing projects.

Proficiency in Microsoft desktop applications (PowerPoint, Word, Excel), web publishing (e.g., Drupal) and social media platforms.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in a University setting. Video production and editing skills a plus.
