The University of Michigan-Dearborn offers an exciting new opportunity for an Assistant Director of Laboratories in the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters, and in the Natural Sciences Department (NSCI). The successful applicant will collaborate with Facilities Operations for laboratory maintenance, renovations, and repairs, and be responsible for supervision of the Natural Sciences Building (NSB), Science Learning and Research Center (SLRC), Computing Wing (CW), Environmental Interpretive Center (EIC), Science Faculty Center (SFC), and the Pony Barn Research Station. This work will span all research and instructional labs, including and incorporating safe practices in these spaces.  

Responsibilities:

  1. The Assistant Director of Laboratories will play a strategic and crucial role in the business of health and safety practices and policies in NSCI. In collaboration with the two Lab Managers, Lab Supervisor, and Environmental Health and Safety Office (EHS), the successful applicant will provide resources and experience in the chemical waste management, animal, bio-safety, and radioactive use protocols as dictated by their representative agencies at University of Michigan - Ann Arbor.  We instruct approximately 125 separate laboratories or laboratory sections per year, and the Assistant Director of Laboratories is responsible for the smooth and safe delivery of these learning opportunities.  
  2. The successful applicant will represent NSCI in matters pertaining to its physical footprint and connection to access, shipping and receiving, and other services pertaining to the safe and secure function of the department. 
  3. The Assistant Director of Laboratories will interface with the Department Chair, the Department’s Academic Disciplines, individual faculty teaching and research, and laboratory support staff; providing direction, assistance, and support by managing the NSB, SLRC, Pony Barn, SFC, and EIC and their inventories.
  4. The successful applicant will supervise the NSCI technical staff, two Lab Managers, Lab Supervisor, and will work with The NSCI Center’s Directors (EIC, SLC, and the GAM Laboratory) to establish and maintain a visionary and effective team approach to the operation of the Department.
  5. He/she will be a financial reviewer, collaborating with the Department Accounting Clerk, Administrative Specialist, and Department Chair in budgetary matters. 
  6. The Assistant Director of Laboratories, together with faculty, will ensure that all labs are operating under the appropriate guidelines and requirements of EHS, EPA, DHS, MIOSH, HazMat, IACUC (Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee) in the partnership with Facilities and Planning. 
  7. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong and effective communication skill and leadership in safety and in overseeing laboratory purchases, inventories, equipment maintenance, laboratory fee management, key requests, and departmental event management. 

Required Qualifications:

  • 5-7 years working experience in facility management, space planning, and space management necessary.  This includes experience in Environmental Health and Safety or related working experience in a laboratory setting (required).
  • M.S. in Chemistry or a closely related field such as: Biochemistry, Environmental Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering.  
  • Experience with health and safety regulations, policies, and techniques.
  • Experience in hazardous waste disposal
  • Extensive knowledge of OSHA & MIOSHA, EPA, MDEQ, and DOT rules required
  • Strong ability to work in a team environment and independently, exercise initiative, judgment, and provide effective communication and leadership in laboratory safety.
  • Is proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite software and common internet applications such as: Google Drive, Google Docs.  Includes the ability to learn and employ routine UM web applications for: work orders (AIM), hiring (M-Recruit), and M-Pathways purchasing sites.
  • Experience in overseeing/managing budgets in an academic or business setting.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Past experience working in a higher education environment preferred.
  • Knowledge of safe laboratory and facility operations practices in a research environment.
  • Knowledge of Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulations
  • Experience and/or education in building systems design.
  • Experience with project management of laboratory and/or facility design and construction is desired.
  • Experience working with stakeholders to identify and document all functional and technical requirements.
  • Experience effectively reading blue prints, schematics and working drawings.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent certification, or documented experience. 
  • Evidence of successful financial oversight/management experience in a science or engineering enterprise.
