General Purpose: Manages the day to day operations of the Editorial Offices of the Editor in Chief and the subordinate Editors associated with the Biochemistry Journal including setting priorities and determining schedules. Monitors performance and completion of work assignments.

Responsible for reviewing, classifying and providing a recommended Executive/Associate Editor assignment to the Editor in Chief for more than 6K scientific papers received from multiple national and international sources annually. Tracks and monitors the assigned Executive/Associate Editors’ offices processing of the assigned papers. Duties include daily review of high volume electronic submissions and closeout with the Editor in chief.

Recommends and invites authors from the scientific community to write editorials. Ensuring sufficient front matter is available for each weekly edition; totaling over 100 submissions annually. In addition, assists the Editor in Chief, Associate/Executive Editors by editing selected front matter pieces for the Journal.

Oversees the solicitation, submission and selection of applicants for the new ACS Award to recognize high profile papers in Biochemistry written by current degree seeking graduate students. Will develop and refine the awards process including but not limited to communications, editorial support, recognition ceremony and honoraria.

Oversees the solicitation of weekly cover art images for the Journal.

Serves as initial point of contact and source of information and guidance to Biochemistry authors, reviewers and Editorial Advisory Board members and their administrative staff. Provides a high level of customer service.

Coordinates with the American Chemical Society (ACS) Managing Editor and staff and other professionals at ACS Publications Office responsible for marketing, layout, information technology and artwork/graphic design.

Analyzes and manages sensitive issues for the office exhibiting a high degree of discretion and confidentiality. Resolves non-routine problems and performs in-depth analysis to ensure all editorial offices use applicable policies, practices, procedures and principles.

Ensures communication among multiple offices for various projects and initiatives in a timely and efficient manner. Coordinates special issues assigned to the Editor in Chief’s Office including research and assembling front matter and communicating with various ACS staff and other managing editors.

Determines office priorities and researches with associated and executive editors to target new contributing authors and invite them to submit manuscripts to the journal.

Conduct independent scientific research for the Editor in Chief to provide input on the annual notice to authors.

Analyze performance and timeliness statistics for all subordinate offices including authors and manuscript reviewers. Compile and provide periodic reporting and suggestions for improvement to the Editor in Chief.

Conducts budgetary and cost analyses on Editor in Chief and all subordinate Editor Office activities. Supervises financial activities and tracks expenditures, reviews and reconciles Editor in Chief’s budget and monitors financial activity.

Ensure Editor and Editorial Advisory Board meeting agendas, meeting materials, presentations and speeches are prepared in advance and that all details of the meeting events are properly scheduled and supported.

Oversees the preparation of correspondence, reports, nominations, recommendations and other materials as well as the coordination of events and special projects for the office. Manage and maintain electronic database of reviewers and authors.

May perform other duties as assigned. Some travel may be required.

Required Education and Experience: Bachelor's Degree in a related field and four years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
