Chemistry Position Announcement

The Bowdoin College Chemistry Department seeks applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Chemistry beginning Fall 2019. A Ph.D. in chemistry or a related field is required. We are interested in candidates who approach theoretical or experimental chemistry informed by a physical chemistry perspective, broadly defined. We are especially interested in candidates able to make connections to existing interdisciplinary programs at the College (such as Biochemistry, Digital and Computational Studies, Environmental Studies, or Neuroscience), strengthen one or more of the interdisciplinary tracks through our major (e.g. neurochemical, geochemical, or environmental tracks), or bring new knowledge and skills (e.g. computational, materials, supramolecular, or polymer chemistry) to our program.

The Department welcomes applications from candidates committed to the instruction and support of a diverse student population, and from those who will enrich and contribute to the multifaceted diversity of our College. We value a community in which individuals of all backgrounds are warmly welcomed and encouraged to succeed.

The successful candidate will teach three courses per year, which includes responsibility for introductory and general chemistry; an intermediate-level physical chemistry-based course; and an advanced course related to the candidate’s research strengths. Full-time laboratory instructor support is provided for introductory and intermediate level courses.

Bowdoin values a strong commitment to research and a promise of long-term successful scholarly engagement, as well as a dedication to teaching excellence in a liberal arts environment. The successful candidate must possess a strong commitment to undergraduate education and demonstrate the potential to develop a funded, active, and productive research program that involves undergraduates. There is internal funding in support of research, a junior sabbatical leave, and an accelerated sabbatical schedule. We recognize that recruiting and retaining faculty may involve considerations of spouses and domestic partners. When possible, the College will attempt to accommodate and respond creatively to the needs of spouses and partners of members of the faculty.

Bowdoin College accepts only electronic submissions. Please visit https://careers.bowdoin.edu to submit: 1) a cover letter; 2) a curriculum vitae; 3) a detailed description of research plans; 4) a statement that describes your teaching philosophy and how your teaching, scholarship, and/or mentorship supports our commitment to diversity and inclusion; and 5) the names and contact information for three references who have agreed to provide letters of recommendation.

Review of applications will begin on October 19, 2018.
