Associate Teaching Professor (LSOE) - Biochemistry and Biophysics

University of California, San Diego

THE DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY AND BIOCHEMISTRY within the Division of Physical Sciences at UC San Diego (http://chemistry.ucsd.edu/) is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff and student body and invites applications for an Associate Teaching Professor position (also termed Lecturer with Security of Employment, LSOE) beginning July 1, 2019. This faculty series, which is unique to the University of California system, carries full membership in the Academic Senate with comparable rights and responsibilities as the standard professorial track, but with a greater emphasis on teaching and educational scholarship. All positions are subject to availability of funding.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Chemical Education or a closely related field and demonstrated potential for a recognized program of excellence in teaching. Candidates must also demonstrate that they are strong chemistry educators. A successful candidate should have a well-articulated plan of contributing to programs that increase the access and success of underrepresented students and faculty in the sciences. We especially welcome candidates who have already participated in, contributed to, or created such programs, who can articulate how this experience helped shape their plan, and who have a commitment to helping shape and expand the University's diversity initiatives (http://diversity.ucsd.edu/). Applications should include a statement describing past and/or potential contributions to equity, diversity, and inclusion (see http://physicalsciences.ucsd.edu/faculty/contributions-to-diversity-statements.html.)

Teaching in biochemistry and introductory chemistry for both lectures and laboratory courses, will be expected. Ideally, the candidate will have skills and interest in teaching lab and lecture courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels.

Successful faculty candidates will be expected to assume a leadership role in the educational mission of the Department and contribute to University and public service. Successful candidates will also have a proven track record of excellence in teaching as well as development of new courses or curricula at the undergraduate level or will have led scholarly activities outside the classroom that have resulted in significant advancements in biochemistry or chemical education.

Preference will be given to candidates who have experience and demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level; interest and/or experience with emerging pedagogical trends and curricular development, particularly in the area of biochemistry (both the lecture and laboratory learning environments); and an interest in or prior accomplishment with educational grant writing, educational project or program development and assessment, and/or chemical education research. Applicants will be evaluated on teaching and scholarly activity, as well as on potential and/or demonstrated leadership in areas contributing to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on University of California pay scale. Review of applications will commence on November 15, 2018 and continue until the position is filled.

Applications are to be submitted online at: http://apptrkr.com/1326285 . Please submit a curriculum vitae with list of publications and reprints of up to five representative papers. Please also include separate statements for each of the following: 1) statement of past and proposed teaching (with student evaluations from up to five previous teaching experiences and 2) a statement on past and/or potential contributions to diversity, equity and inclusion (see http://physicalsciences.ucsd.edu/faculty/contributions-to-diversity-statements.html for additional information on how to write this statement). Candidates must also arrange to have at three to five letters of reference addressing teaching, scholarly activity and professional service posted to the above website by the deadline.
