Co-Director, Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT)
We are seeking a Senior Manager to serve as the Co-Director for the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) and lead the Integrated Nanotechnologies Group at Sandia. This Group includes the Sandia staff and two Departments within CINT and the Radiation-Solid Interactions Department, which has close collaborations with CINT and broader Sandia missions. The advancement plan for this role is excellent, as the CINT Co-Director is expected to succeed the Director at a future point.
The Senior Manager will work closely with management colleagues at Los Alamos to:
- Provide leadership to ensure the success of the overall scientific and user program of CINT
- Maintain and grow strong and effective partnership between the Laboratories
- Grow the impact of CINT to the missions of DOE and the two host Laboratories
- Develop and execute CINTs scientific vision and strategy as it relates to the broader set of sponsors beyond DOE/SC’s Basic Energy Sciences (BES) programs
- Serve as the primary point of contact for CINT's external advisory bodies
The Senior Manager will also:
- Build strong and effective partnerships between the Radiation-Solid Interactions group, CINT, and the broader Sandia laboratory missions.
- Develop a vision and an external customer base for the Ion Beam Laboratory as a national user facility.
CINT is a Department of Energy/Office of Science Nanoscale Science Research Center (US DOE/SC NSRC) jointly supported by Sandia National Labs and Los Alamos National Lab, operating as a national user facility devoted to establishing nanoscale science by developing the scientific principles that govern the design, performance and integration of nanoscale materials. With sites in both Albuquerque, NM and Los Alamos, NM, CINT provides world-class facilities and expertise to the broad scientific community with the mission to support and accelerate the progress of nanoscience. Proposal-based access is offered to tools and expertise focused around CINT scientific thrust areas: In-Situ Characterization and Nanomechanics, Nanophotonics and Optical Nanomaterials, Soft, Biological, and Composite Nanomaterials, and Quantum Materials Systems.
Sandia’s Integrated Nanotechnologies Senior Manager is responsible for leadership and oversight of three Sandia departments, two of which are populated by the Sandia employees participating in CINT. Staff in the third, Radiation-Solid Interactions department, conduct ion-beam characterization and analysis and ion implantation research activities. Several staff of this department are CINT affiliated scientists.

- A PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Materials or a closely related field with 10 years’ relevant technology experience
- Experience developing strategy, plans, and implementation of new science programs
- Experience developing externally-funded scientific research programs from varying sponsors
- Experience mentoring and developing scientists
- Experience building teams through effective communication and consensus techniques
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Clearance
- Direct technical and managerial experience
- Experience working with the Department of Energy, Office of Science (including Basic Energy Sciences)
- Experience with national user facilities
- A working network of scientific contacts encompassing Sandia's and Los Alamos' diverse technical base, universities and government labs
- Involvement and leadership in the international scientific community, including professional organizations and workshops/ meetings
- Knowledge and understanding of how CINT can support the energy mission of DOE, as well as other mission areas
- Ability to work effectively with personnel in the DOE Office of Basic Energy Sciences
- Proven scientific excellence and broad knowledge of condensed matter and materials research
- Superb interpersonal skills
Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) granted Q-level security clearance.
Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug testing, and a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
