Position Summary
This is an institutionally sponsored position for a research associate in the department of pharmaceutical sciences, Feik School of Pharmacy, University of the Incarnate Word. The candidate will primarily be responsible for working with department faculty or principle investigators (PIs) engaged in medicinal chemistry-related research. The candidate may be asked to assist with research in other areas given appropriate guidance and supervision. The candidate will be required to keep good laboratory records, maintain research related instruments and equipment in working order, and to troubleshoot as needed. The candidate may also be asked to assist with occasional teaching duties.
Description of Job Duties
-Communicate effectively with PIs regarding project timelines and expectations
-Maintain project inventories: obtain quotes, order chemicals and supplies
-Multi-task in concurrent projects
-Keep good records: perform accurate calculations, precisely record procedures and results of scientific experiments in laboratory notebooks
-Work up reactions and purify compounds using manual or automated flash chromatography, preparative silica gel chromatography, and HPLC.
-Characterize organic compounds using 1H and 13C NMR, IR, and UV/Vis spectroscopy
-Assist in preparation of manuscripts, grants, protocols, and presentations
-Other duties as assigned
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
A strong working knowledge of multi-step and parallel syntheses, drug design and syntheses of small molecules and communication of scientific work at conferences are desirable. The candidate will have good NMR and computer skills, and be familiar with chemistry software (ChemDraw, ACD labs, Scifinder etc.). The candidate will be willing to learn new techniques and apply them in research. The candidate will participate in professional development, seminars, and workshops to keep current in professional skills.
Being energetic and having good communication, interpersonal and time-management skills will be paramount for success in this position. The candidate must be willing to interact effectively with various intra-and extramural personnel, vendors, and technical staff. The candidate will be able to instruct students and other users, in and outside the laboratory, in the use of instruments/equipment plus the proper handling of chemicals. The candidate will have the ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures. The employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA.
Required Education
Ph.D. in synthetic Organic or Medicinal or Natural Products chemistry will be preferred.
Required Work Experience
Work experience in the area related to synthetic organic chemistry is desirable.
Work Hours
Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. with occasional weekends. The schedule may be subject to change with department needs.
