At a moment of great opportunity, Syracuse University invites inquiries, nominations and applications for the position of dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science (ECS). The new dean will join the university as it continues the rollout of a highly ambitious and aggressive plan to hire 100 additional faculty to collaborate with existing faculty in multidisciplinary cluster areas focused on many of the grand challenges of this century.

Reporting to the vice chancellor for academic affairs and provost and serving as a vital member of the university’s senior team, the new dean will provide vision, innovation, experience and effective leadership, capitalizing upon this important moment for the university and college and further building on the successes of a distinguished college faculty while catalyzing interactions among academic units and programs that are transformational in their impact. A key player within an ambitious agenda amidst a time of great investment in this college, the new dean will grow the ECS faculty considerably, advancing significantly the college's educational capacity and research profile; champion diversity, equity and inclusion; and increase fundraising, steward alumni and donors, and build relationships broadly.

The new dean should be a positive, strategic, inspiring and visionary leader with administrative experience appropriate in scope to show evidence of an ability to grow the College of Engineering and Computer Science. The successful candidate will possess a vitae with a stellar research program, proficiency as an undergraduate and graduate educator, and demonstrated experience and accomplishments in all aspects of faculty life. A national and global reputation and/or visibility is highly desirable. An earned terminal degree, and credentials to be appointed at the level of full professor with tenure in one of disciplines of the college, are required.

Founded in 1870, Syracuse University is a private, co-educational R1 research institution renowned for its academic rigor, richly diverse learning experiences and spirit of discovery. Recognized as a student-focused global research university that provides an environment in which students from diverse backgrounds come together, the university enrolls over 21,000 students across the university’s 13 schools and colleges, including over 15,000 undergraduate and over 6,600 graduate students. The university has approximately 1,700 full- and part-time tenured or tenure-track and non-tenure track faculty.

Established in 1901, the College of Engineering and Computer Science is located on Syracuse University’s 270-acre campus in the heart of Central New York. The college offers more than 30 programs in four departments – Biomedical and Chemical Engineering; Civil and Environmental Engineering; Electrical Engineering and Computer Science; and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. ECS has a total enrollment of just over 2,624, including 1,534 undergraduate students, 818 Master’s students, and 272 Ph.D. students. The students are supported by 84 full-time faculty and 44 adjunct and affiliate faculty. The college has 66 full-time staff and nine part-time staff.

Inquiries, nominations and applications are invited. Review of applications has begun and will continue until the position is filled. For fullest consideration, applicant materials should be received by April 1. Candidates should provide, as three separate documents, a curriculum vitae, a letter of application that addresses the responsibilities and requirements described in the leadership profile available at www.wittkieffer.com, and the names and contact information of five references. References will not be contacted without prior knowledge and approval of candidates. These materials should be sent electronically via e-mail to the university’s consultants Robin Mamlet, Robert Luke, Suzanne Teer and Alejandra Gillette-Teran at SyracuseDeanECS@wittkieffer.com. The consultants can be reached by telephone through the desk of Leslie Donahue at 630-575-6178.
