Job Details

Princeton University seeks six data scientists to contribute to the Schmidt DataX project, which aims to advance the breadth and depth of data science impact leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning to explore questions at the frontiers of human knowledge.

The six Data Scientists, in three-year term positions, will create and improve data-analysis software to operate at large scale, leading to faster discovery, wider impact, and greater continuity.

The three targeted areas of research focus are catalysis (through the Department of Chemistry), biomedical data science (through the Department of Computer Science), and information technology policy (through the Center for Information Technology Policy).

  • Catalysis: With the aid of Data Scientists, the catalysis initiative at Princeton can lead in building tools to extract chemical data from existing electronic lab notebooks to make more data available for learning, and also in creating easy-to-use software to lower the barrier for adoption of data science to increase the pace of research in this field. Apply at https://www.princeton.edu/acad-positions/position/10662
  • Biomedical data science: Analyzing biomedical data at scale remains challenging, requiring new algorithms, software-analysis pipelines, standard interfaces, protection of sensitive user data, and better ways to leverage the public cloud.  By addressing these issues, Data Scientists can transform this work and bring together research across different faculty and data sets into a cohesive research community at Princeton. Apply at https://www.princeton.edu/acad-positions/position/10661
  • Information technology policy:  Information technology policy research covers a range of data-science topics including security and privacy, bias and fairness, and manipulation of data for political aims. The Data Scientists will enable the projects at CITP to achieve unprecedented scale and reach by hardening software tools, making these tools and data broadly available, and taking on new projects involving novel data sets from important stakeholders. Apply at https://www.princeton.edu/acad-positions/position/10641

Data Scientists will create opportunities to educate, train, convene, and support a broad community of researchers on campus. Data Scientists must demonstrate expertise in researching, designing, and implementing algorithms and techniques to exploit the connections between data analysis/machine learning and the fundamental research questions explored by each group.

These positions are subject to the University’s background check policy. Princeton University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
