Overview

The Department of Chemistry at Northwestern University (NU) has a single open position encompassing the roles of Director of Mass Spectrometry (50% effort) and Associate Director (50% effort) within the Integrated Molecular Structure Education and Research Center (IMSERC).

IMSERC maintains a suite of mass spectrometers, NMR spectrometers and X-Ray diffractometers needed to support research within the Department of Chemistry and, more generally, NU. IMSERC also provides support for targeted MS quantitation of drug and drug metabolites through the Clinical Pharmacology Core (http://imserc.northwestern.edu/cpc/). The mass spectrometry laboratory maintains a fleet of 11 instruments that include GC-MS, LC-MS and MALDI MS spectrometers.

As the Director of Mass Spectrometry, the successful candidate will manage a team of three staff. The team has responsibility for training walk-up users (typically synthetic chemists, engineers and biologists), fee-for-service HRMS analysis, and fee-for-service bioanalytical assay development, analysis, and study design. The successful candidate will also have educational responsibilities within the broad remit of mass spectrometry.

As the Associate Director of IMSERC, the successful candidate will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations within the facility. In addition, this person will be responsible for assisting the Director in budget planning, instrumentation development, and the general strategic direction of IMSERC itself.
