The International and Area Studies Academic Program at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach courses in Middle Eastern Studies should an opening arise. The pool will remain in place for two calendar years; those interested in remaining in the pool beyond that time must reapply. Screening of applicants begins immediately and will continue as needed; some appointments may begin in Fall 2015. Applicants may be selected from this pool throughout the two calendar years until May 1, 2017. Positions may range from 33% to 100% time per academic semester, i.e. a teaching load of 1-?3 courses.
The International and Area Studies Academic Program offers six innovative and interdisciplinary undergraduate majors: Middle Eastern Studies, Asian Studies, Latin American Studies, Development Studies, Peace and Conflict Studies, and Political Economy.
DUTIES OF THE POSITION: Teaching one or more of the following undergraduate courses: (a) MES 10: Introduction to Middle Eastern Studies. A gateway lower division course introducing students to the modern and contemporary Middle East; (b) MES 102: Scope and Methods of Research in Middle Eastern Studies. A course intended to train first semester seniors in a wide range of social science methodologies, to teach them how to relate different theories to methods, and to engage them in research design and a capstone experience; (c) MES 150: Advanced Topics in Middle Eastern Studies. A thematic course based on instructor’s area of expertise. There is flexibility in the substantive and regional areas that might be covered by this position. Interdisciplinary and transnational approaches preferred. Courses in Middle Eastern languages and literature and Islamic studies (Qur’an, tafsir, Sufism, etc.) are taught in the Department of Near Eastern Studies and hence not directly relevant to this position. In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties include holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, and preparing course materials (e.g., reader, syllabus).
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Completion of all doctoral degree requirements except the dissertation in history, anthropology, political science, economics, sociology, geography or a related field with a primary focus on the Middle East.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: PhD (or equivalent) in a field specified under minimum/basic qualifications by position start date.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: A commitment to and experience with undergraduate teaching preferred.
SALARY: $49,012-?$84,377 commensurate with experience. Minimum appointment is for one course at 33% per semester or 17% FTE annualized. The search committee is open to offering either multiple positions or hiring a candidate qualified to teach multiple courses.
