Associates Degree in biology or related field. Three years related experience or experience in a related field. A combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.
Nature & Purpose of Position/Usual Duties:
Performs advanced specialist duties for the Biological Sciences Department. Oversight and assistance with laboratory preparation for upper level laboratory courses in Biological Sciences, including but not limited to Microbiology, Genetics, Ecology, Parasitology, Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy, Histology, Developmental Biology, and Molecular Biology.
Primary Responsibilities (Staff Positions Only):
Performs specialist duties. Plans, develops, implements, coordinates and monitors laboratory preparation for upper level laboratory courses in Biological Sciences including but not limited to Microbiology, Genetics, Ecology, Parasitology, Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy, Histology, Developmental Biology, and Molecular Biology. Responsible for coordinating the collection and disposal of biohazardous waste, for maintaining an equipment and chemical inventory, and scheduling annual maintenance of all laboratory equipment. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Other Specifications/Instructions for the Position:
Assists in development of future labs in immunology, medical microbiology, advanced genetics as well as other appropriate courses that are molecular and lab-based. Incumbent must have administrative and organizational competence; strong written and verbal communication skills; be motivated and goal oriented. Requires knowledge of standard laboratory principles and practices in order to oversee the scientific and technical work of the laboratory; leadership skills to manage student teaching assistants, graduate and undergraduate students; and knowledge of laboratory chemical hazards.
