The Biomass Science and Conversion Technology department is dedicated to developing innovative technologies for producing the next generation of biofuels and bioproducts. Our multidisciplinary staff represents a diverse range of backgrounds and skill sets: molecular biology, chemistry, chemical and biochemical engineering, biophysics, computational science, and biochemistry. We partner broadly with other Sandia departments, both in Livermore and Albuquerque, as well as other national laboratories, industry, and universities to develop practical, science-based solutions to national energy challenges. We also play an essential role at the DOE Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) in Emeryville, one of three Bioenergy Research Centers in the US.
The Manager will lead a team of 35 researchers and share responsibility with the 8600 leadership team to continue development of world-class capabilities and impact in biological sciences for Sandia and the Nation. The successful candidate will be responsible for staff located at the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) in Emeryville and SNL/Livermore. This Manager will support Sandia's mission area in Secure and Sustainable Energy Future. This will include a supporting role in the identification and development of significant new biomass project responsibilities to be supported by key external sponsors, including DOE/Biological and Environmental Science (BER), DOE/Bioenergy Technology Office (BETO), DOE/Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E), and Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The successful candidate will also be responsible for assuring safe, secure and effective operations of the department, and for leading the department in making safety a value by aligning actions, behaviors and attitudes to create a culture where safety is inseparable from mission success. The successful candidate will also be responsible for leading the recruitment and career development of a diverse, world-class workforce, and to develop a more inclusive workplace environment.
