The University of Notre Dame, in partnership with AT&T, has launched a Data Science M.S. degree in online format. Aimed at the working professional, this degree will offer the advanced training students need to be skilled, industry-informed and creative data scientists. The curriculum blends academic preparation with hands-on collaboration with industry; the program is designed for students of all academic backgrounds. Offered by the Department of Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics, with the additional participation of leading Notre Dame faculty from a range of disciplines including Computer Science and Engineering, Informatics, Psychology and Management, the online MS degree will be a graduate offering of the highest quality built around a meaningful university-industry partnership.
The Department of Applied and Computational Statistics and Mathematics at the University of Notre Dame seeks an experienced colleague to lead this program from its inception. The Academic Director will provide strategic vision, operational and administrative oversight, and business development; s/he will also be a liaison to other University-wide data science research and teaching initiatives. Working closely with senior leadership, departments, and faculty, the Academic Director will be central to the success of the M.S. program and will be an important voice in data science initiatives at Notre Dame. The Academic Director will have a professional faculty position within the Department of Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics; s/he will teach in the MS program, recruit faculty for the program, and work to ensure excellent academic and professional outcomes for the students.
Key Characteristics and Qualifications of the Academic Director
The Academic Director of the MS in Data Science program will be:
? Energetic, entrepreneurial, and collaborative, with demonstrated success as a team leader;
? A leader with the right mixture of academic and industry/professional experience in the field of data science broadly understood;
? Qualified for a Special Professional Faculty Position in the Department of Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics (e.g. either a PhD in a field such as statistics, computer science, informatics OR a compelling blend of managerial and technical experience alongside a graduate degree in the field);
? Skilled leading business development and partnership conversations with industry;
? A capable, experienced, and inspiring teacher;
? A colleague with strong grasp of the affordances of online and digital learning, and an awareness of the strategic role of online and digital learning within the landscape of contemporary higher education.
Key Attributes and Responsibilities of the Position
Leading Notre Dame's MS in Data Science Program, the Academic Director will:
? Work collaboratively with participating Notre Dame faculty and staff (and as guided by the program's Executive Committee) to implement and supervise all academic aspects of the program, including program faculty hiring, training & mentoring; curriculum planning and oversight; course design and outcomes assessment (including placement and student satisfaction); quality assurance; academic policy and program admissions;
? Teach one course per semester in the program and lead one to two annual short-term (4-day) location-based immersion courses at Notre Dame, in Palo Alto, and other locations as appropriate;
? Provide careful financial management and budgetary oversight, in collaboration with the Department and the Office of the Provost; develop growth strategies for the program in partnership with industry, philanthropies, and other partners;
? Lead business development, marketing, student recruitment, and industry partnerships on behalf of the MS program and in partnership with supporting service providers;
? Provide effective managerial oversight of the program, supervise and support professional staff, and ensure compliance with regulatory and administrative procedures;
? Some travel will be required, including collaborations with Notre Dame's new facility in Palo Alto, California;
? Provide annual reports on the academic and nonacademic performance of the program to the program's Executive Committee and senior University leadership.
