The Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS) has been consistently ranked amongst the top ten in the world in a variety of international rankings. The Department features a mix of the classical and the modern aspects of chemical engineering, at all scales ranging from the molecular to the macroscopic and even the global. We have outstanding faculty members at all ranks, who have made strong contributions in both pure and applied research, winning numerous top national and international awards and recognitions. Many are attracting highly significant research funding from both government and industry.
Currently, the Department comprises clusters of leading research groups in the general areas of fundamental and applied nanomaterials science, biotechnology and cellular
engineering, membrane science, process and systems engineering, and separations, with a good mix of theoretical and experimental focus within most clusters. Singapore is one of the world’s leading chemical, pharmaceutical and semiconductor hubs, and has a vibrant research and entrepreneurship ecosystem, with an intensified focus on translation of research for societal and economic benefit for the country and region. The Department has played and continues to play a pivotal role in developing the research and technology infrastructure for Singapore’s dynamic manufacturing and knowledge-based economy. The Department, being in a research-intensive public university is also committed to excellence in education, and has a tradition of attracting the best and brightest students in Singapore amongst the science and engineering disciplines. Our students are trained for careers in the petroleum, petrochemical, semiconductor, pharmaceutical, food, consumer products and healthcare industries which contribute to more than 25 per cent of the country’s GDP.
An international search has been launched to select the next Head of the Department. We seek an exceptional candidate, who has broad understanding of the changing research and educational landscapes in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, and allied fields, and has the commitment, energy and vision to lead the Department to the next level of excellence. The desirable attributes are excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to rally faculty and capitalize on the ecosystem to build peaks of excellence research programs, foster and amplify research synergy and above all, a willingness to advance the collective cause of the Department. Other expectations include effective team building experience, track record of securing significant competitive research funding, and exposure in a leadership position in a prominent academic institution. The successful candidate must have an earned doctorate in Chemical Engineering and/or Biomolecular Engineering or an allied field, with credentials suitable for appointment as a Full Professor at NUS.
