OIST has 46 faculty members and over 200 researchers, with opportunities for collaboration in a wide range of fields including (1) cell biology, neurobiology, developmental biology, evolutional biology, genomics, structural biology, and systems biology (2) interface science, nanotechnology, novel 2D materials and heterostructures, organic and inorganic functional materials, photocatalytic and energy materials, quantum optics, quantum materials, and surface science. OIST emphasizes interdisciplinary research, built on strong core research areas, and is committed to investment in state-of-the-art instrumentation. Equipment presently available includes 400 MHz NMR, mass spectrometers, next-generation sequencers, a suite of super-resolution microscopes, a 300 keV cryo-TEM, a class-1000 clean room, nano-fabrication facilities and a 4400-core supercomputer. These resources are managed so as to encourage easy access and collaborative research. OIST is an English-language graduate university, offering a world-class research environment in an area of distinctive culture, unique ecology, and outstanding natural beauty. The research community is highly international, with faculty, staff and students drawn from over 30 different countries. Attractive housing, after-school programs, and child care in a specially designed Child Development Center, are all available on campus.
