The University of Maine is the state's principal research and graduate institution. Established as a Land Grant University under the Morrill Act in 1862, UMaine was accorded Sea Grant College status by the Federal Government in 1980. UMaine is located in Orono, a classic college town bounded by the Stillwater and Penobscot Rivers.
