The NSF Center for Genetically Encoded Materials (C-GEM) seeks to repurpose the cellular translational apparatus to establish a fundamentally new form of chemical matter - sequence-defined chemical polymers.

C-GEM is an NSF Center for Chemical Innovation led by Professor Alanna Schepartz at UC Berkeley, with investigators at Berkeley, Boston College, Cornell, U Minnesota, St. Jude, and Yale. C-GEM also collaborates with citizen scientists to design new RNAs through the scientific discovery game Eterna.
