We are currently seeking an experienced Chemist / Material Scientist to join our Packaging Design & Innovation Department in Richmond, VA to assist in the development and execution of printed packaging materials. The successful candidate will solicit needed information from suppliers and cross function partners and work with packaging development specialists to qualify new materials, inks and varnishes. Specific accountabilities include: * Independently analyzing and solving problems concerning packaging inks, coatings and materials requiring the application of business-specific technical practices, procedures and theories. * Demonstrating effective collaboration with cross-functional groups and external suppliers to ensure the integrity and compliance of printed and non-printed packaging materials. * Transforming chemistry/science knowledge and business specific data into information others without a chemistry background can use to complete packaging development projects. * Serving as a technical resource in chemistry/science to the Packaging Design & Innovation Group to ensure all compliance requirements are met during the course of packaging development. * Monitoring projects and engaging with stakeholders regarding project status and recommending course corrections as needed.
Qualifications include: * A BS in chemistry, physical chemistry or a closely related field. (Master's degree preferred). * A minimum of 3 years of professional experience in roles that apply chemistry or analytical science. * Background in the pharmaceutical, consumer products, chemical or tobacco industries and/or contract toxicology laboratory experience. * Practical knowledge of regulations including the Code of Federal Regulations as it applies to materials. * Basic knowledge and understanding of Analytical Test Methods and Science Principles. * General knowledge of packaging and printing technologies would be desirable. * Strong verbal communication, interpersonal skills, project planning, and ability to influence others without authority. * Capability to work collaboratively with cross functional partners and suppliers to obtain and disseminate needed information. * Capability to effectively present and communicate technical information to cross functional groups and departmental management. * Self-motivation and direction, ability to work with minimal supervision, high initiative and flexibility * Proficiency with Microsoft Office, databases (i.e., Filemaker Pro, PI2000) and querying for relevant information.
