Founded in 1834, the University offers degrees in architecture, business, law, liberal arts, medicine, public health and tropical medicine, the sciences and engineering, and social work. An emphasis on outstanding research and an enduring commitment to excellence in education with community service are built into Tulane's culture and community. With 10 schools and almost 14,000 students, Tulane has a rich selection of academic fields for students to explore, and a culture that invites lively exchanges between people with different backgrounds and interests. As New Orleans experiences a period of rejuvenation, Tulane is led by a cohesive new leadership team that is defining a bold and ambitious next chapter for the University.
Created in 2006, SSE is unique in that it has established Tulane as the first and to date only major research university to merge the behavioral sciences, physical sciences, life sciences, engineering, and mathematics into one integrated and trans-disciplinary academic unit. The organization of the School has positioned Tulane University to take advantage of the natural interrelation between discovery, technology, and innovation. It strives to be a leader in addressing global problems through research and shaping future generations of scientists and engineers through its education programs. The School of Science and Engineering comprises ten departments and offers degrees in engineering and the sciences at the baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral levels.
Reporting to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, the Dean will build upon the strong foundation and national reputation of SSE for innovative scholarship and research and pedagogical excellence. He or she will oversee all aspects of the School's operations, including academic affairs, administration and planning, financial management, student recruitment and career placement, institutional advancement, and alumni/ae engagement. The Dean must possess a record of leadership and academic administration experience, as well as an earned doctorate in a relevant field and a record of distinguished scholarship and teaching. He or she will have an energetic and collaborative leadership style that inspires faculty, students, and staff to build pride in, and commitment to, a shared SSE vision.
