Assistant Professor for Fermentation and Bioprocessing

General Description of the Position: The Department of Grain Science and Industry is seeking applications for a 9-month tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level with 80% research and 20% teaching in the areas of fermentation and bioprocessing of grains and their derivatives for foods, beverages, feeds and non-food products with the expectation for a summer appointment.

Job Description:


The candidate is expected to conduct fundamental and applied research related to fermentation and bioprocessing of grains and their derivatives for foods, fermented beverages, feeds and non-food products.

The candidate is expected to obtain extramural support to establish a nationally and internationally recognized research program and provide a vision to address current and future needs of bioprocessing of grains and non-food products.


The candidate shall teach existing courses covering subject matter in bioprocessing and fermentation as well as develop courses in his/her area of expertise.  

The candidate will provide effective academic advising to graduate students, help students with setting academic and career goals, and advise students to achieve academic requirements. 


The candidate will advise undergraduate clubs and serve on departmental, college and university committees and appropriate professional/industry associations.

The candidate will perform other duties as requested by the Department Head in keeping with the responsibilities of the appointment.

The candidate is expected to support diversity, collegiality, and must have the ability to work in a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary setting.  

Required Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Food Science and Engineering, Biological Agricultural Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Cereal/Grain Science, Microbiology, or relevant discipline, and possess excellent oral and written communication skills, the ability to speak English clearly, and a strong commitment to fostering and expanding diversity in the grain-based food and beverage industry; be qualified to teach in a classroom setting; and have a demonstrated ability to conduct and publish scholarly research. The candidate must create and work in an environment that supports interdisciplinary, multi-programmatic, and multi-institutional teams.

Preferred Qualifications: A demonstrated ability to conduct independent research, secure extramural support, teach in a classroom setting, and engage the grain processing industry.
