Job Summary
NREL is currently searching for a Postdoctoral Researcher for our National Bioenergy Center. Future biofuel pathways will likely focus on a combination of carbohydrate and hydrocarbon-based fuels from a variety of sources, including algae. Novel conversion pathways are being developed, and broad chemical conversion chemistries are deployed alongside strain development for increased biomass and product biosynthesis.

  • The successful candidate will design and execute laboratory experiments for algae strain development for biomass productivity improvements, isolate and quantify high-value products from algae, including oils as well as biofuel and bioproduct percursor fractions of particular interest are the oleochemicals derived from lipids, including routes to biopolymers.
  • The candidate will need to demonstrate clear record keeping skills with special attention to data traceability and unexpected observations.
  • The candidate will perform multiple chemical analyses (including GC/MS and LC/MS) on these fractions, and interpret and communicate the results in multiple peer-reviewed manuscripts.

Required Education, Experience, and Skills
Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with biosynthesis, extraction, and purification of storage and structural components of cell biomass.
  • Understanding of biological pathways
  • The ideal candidate has a track record of high impact publications and collaborations and a broad basis of biochemistry in plants, algae or other microbial organism.
