Duke University, one of the world’s finest research universities and a leader in interdisciplinary innovation and global engagement, seeks a Dean of the Nicholas School of the Environment. The Dean of the Nicholas School is the School’s chief academic and administrative officer and reports to the Provost and the President.

The School’s mission is to create knowledge and leaders of consequence for a sustainable future; to further understanding of basic earth and environmental processes and human behavior related to the environment; and to serve and inform society about environmental challenges. Committed to a culture of interdisciplinary collaboration, faculty in the Nicholas School include preeminent researchers and educators whose expertise spans the physical, life, and social sciences relating to the earth and environment.

The Nicholas School administers academic programs at the undergraduate, professional master’s, and doctoral levels.  The signature professional degree, the Master of Environmental Management (campus-based and online), prepares students for leadership positions in the private, public, and nonprofit sectors.  School faculty oversee doctoral programs in Environmental Science & Policy, Earth & Ocean Sciences, and Marine Science & Conservation, and participate in University doctoral programs in Ecology, Environmental Policy, and Toxicology & Environmental Health.  The School administers undergraduate majors in Environmental Sciences & Policy and in Earth & Ocean Sciences. These programs are offered across Duke’s Durham campus, as well as at the Duke Marine Laboratory, a satellite campus of resident faculty, students and staff located on the coast in Beaufort, NC. The School has approximately 70 core faculty (including 10 professors of the practice), 120 staff, 160 doctoral students, 350 professional master’s students, and over 100 undergraduate majors.

In keeping with the School’s culture of interdisciplinary collaboration, School faculty are actively engaged in Duke’s interdisciplinary programs, notably the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions, the Duke Global Health Institute, the Duke Energy Initiative, the Duke Forest, and other units within and beyond Duke.

The successful candidate will be a respected scholar in a field relating to environmental or earth science or policy, and will have significant administrative experience in the academic, government and/or nonprofit sectors; superb strategic planning and financial management skills; a track record of successful fundraising; and a demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity and inclusion in professional life.
