Harvard’s Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology is seeking applicants for the Director of Advanced Undergraduate Labs, a teaching-focused staff position with direct responsibility for the department’s advanced chemistry teaching labs. The Director teaches undergraduate courses in chemical research, laboratory methods, and synthetic organic and inorganic chemistry, while overseeing a state-of-the-art lab space well-suited for research in synthetic chemistry.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated proficiency in teaching with several years of undergraduate teaching experience, especially in organic and/or inorganic laboratory courses. Experience mentoring undergraduate researchers is desirable, as well as written and verbal communication skills. We encourage applicants from women and underrepresented minorities.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
The Director of Advanced Undergraduate Laboratories teaches laboratory chemistry courses and oversees a well-equipped, state of the art, advanced undergraduate laboratory space. The DAUL is a senior staff position with a dependent lectureship in chemistry. The DAUL develops Chemistry 100, the undergraduate research project based course, from their own research interests and in collaboration with the faculty. The DAUL works closely with all advanced undergraduate laboratory courses but has direct responsibility for the synthetic organic and synthetic inorganic chemistry classes (Chemistry 135 and 145) and general oversight of advanced physical chemistry laboratory class (Chemistry 165). Instructs and supervises laboratory students and Teaching Fellows. Manages operational and instrumentation budgets for advanced laboratory courses and oversees safety program. Sets up and maintains laboratory instrumentation. Contributes to the ongoing development of the advanced laboratory program and entire CCB undergraduate laboratory program. Develops instructional materials as needed to support and build undergraduate laboratory program. Introduces innovative new experiments regularly. Responsible for regular reporting on the laboratory program. Is available for undergraduate advising and teaching. Reports to the Director of Undergraduate Studies.
