Chief, Structural Biophysics Laboratory

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is seeking an outstanding, internationally recognized scientist to serve as Chief of the Structural Biophysics Laboratory (SBL) in the Center for Cancer Research (CCR).  Located on the Frederick, Maryland campus of NCI, the SBL focuses on structural biology and biophysics research aimed at understanding the mechanisms of action and regulation of proteins and nucleic acids, especially molecular processes and functions that are relevant to cancer and other human diseases. The SBL has access to all modern tools of structural biology, including nuclear magnetic resonance, X-ray crystallography (in-house, synchrotron, and free electron laser), small angle X-ray scattering (in-house and synchrotron-based), cryo-electron microscopy, and computational biology. Additionally, the SBL has a well-equipped biophysics core facility.  Further information about the SBL may be found at:

NCI is part of the National Institutes of Health in the Department of Health and Human Services, a federal government agency.  CCR is the largest component of the intramural biomedical research effort at NIH and is a major user of the NIH Clinical Research Center, a state-of-the-art research hospital on the Bethesda, Maryland campus. The CCR offers a tremendous depth and breadth of intellectual and technological resources, as well as opportunities for collaboration with investigators both within and outside of the NIH.  The research environment is highly conducive to advancing translational research and highly collaborative, emphasizing multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary team science.

The SBL Chief is expected to establish a strong research program in structural biology/biophysics in addition to providing leadership of the SBL and the structural biology community in the NCI Intramural Program.  Applicants should hold a Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in a relevant discipline, and should possess outstanding communication skills and documented leadership experience.  Tenured faculty or industrial scientists of equivalent rank with a demonstrated commitment to structural biophysics should apply.  Salary will be commensurate with experience and accomplishments.  This position is not restricted to U.S. citizens. A full civil service package of benefits (including health insurance, life insurance, and retirement) is available.

This position is subject to a background investigation. The NIH is dedicated to building a diverse community in its training and employment programs.
