The Material Measurement Laboratory of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) anticipates the need for a Division Chief of its Materials Science and Engineering Division (MSED) (https://www.nist.gov/mml/materials-measurement-science-division). The MSED has more than 90 permanent scientific and engineering staff and over 85 domestic and international associates. Its permanent technical staff consist of PhD-level researchers focusing on materials sciences and engineering from a variety of scientific perspectives. The division’s multidisciplinary activities provide the measurement science, standards, and technology required to support the Nation’s need to design, develop, manufacture, and use materials. This work builds confidence in measurements needed to advance knowledge and foster innovation in the broad range of manufacturing and technology sectors that rely upon advanced materials. The principal duties for the division are on the Gaithersburg, MD campus of NIST.
Candidates should have extensive experience in materials research and in managing a multidisciplinary scientific and technical workforce. Candidates should have an advanced degree in the physical sciences with a demonstrated specialization in the materials sciences or materials engineering, in accordance with OPM qualification standards. Depending on the identified candidate’s professional background they will be hired as a Physical Scientists, ZP-1301, Grade V or as a Supervisory Physical Scientist, ZP-1301, Grade-V. An applicant’s CV or Resume must provide clear evidence that they have performed highly creative, outstanding research that has led or can lead to major advances in the discipline or field of science involved, or to major advances in science or technology in general, can be rated under this provision for highly demanding research positions requiring similar abilities or show at least 1 year equivalent at the GS-14 level.
