CHEMISTRY INSTRUCTOR FULL TIME CONTRACT, TENURE TRACK (10 MONTHS)
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Regular/contract instructors participate in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs, courses and other experiences that will directly result in the educational growth of the students and support advancement of the visions, missions and values of the College and District. This position will entail teaching lecture and laboratory courses in General Chemistry for science and engineering majors. The successful candidate will also have shared responsibility for developing a state-of-the-art chemistry program for the department, and will include development, implementation and articulation of curriculum, development of facilities, and obtaining and executing grants. Faculty in the Department have a commitment to a Guided Pathway approach for its STEM majors and work hard to increase the number of students who complete degree and transfer requirements by providing academic support, mentorship and extracurricular assistance. It is expected that the person in this position will help to expand the department in this area. The department has a commitment to the use of technology in education and to integration of curriculum between related scientific disciplines whenever possible. This position may include a combination of day and evening assignments, large lectures and small seminars, and is being offered by a college strongly committed to the “open door” concept serving a diverse student population. Instructors will be expected to perform other duties consistent with their faculty job description as stated in the faculty contract.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: APPLICANTS MUST MEET ONE OF THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:
- Master’s in chemistry OR
- Bachelor’s in chemistry and Master’s in biochemistry, chemical engineering, chemical physics, physics, molecular biology or geochemistry; OR
- A current California Community College Credential that permits full-time service as a Chemistry Instructor; OR
- The equivalent. If you are applying based on “the equivalent”, you must complete a Full-Time Academic Equivalency Form
NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must demonstrate:
- Academic preparation for teaching general chemistry for science and engineering majors, as well as allied health majors, at the college level.
- Experience using laboratory equipment and modern analytical equipment (GC, GC-MS, HPLC, AA, FTIR, UV-Vis, NMR) in chemistry teaching environments and/or research/industry environment.
- Demonstrated commitment to remain current in the field of chemistry.
- Experience in the use of a variety of teaching strategies and delivery methods.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and with teams of colleagues at all levels.
- Skills and experience in motivating students from a broad spectrum of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, language, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS Candidates will also be evaluated for qualifications in the following:
- Experience teaching prep chemistry at the college level.
- Experience teaching General, Organic and Biochemistry for allied health majors, such as an integrated, one-semester, 5-unit course for nursing students.
- Experience in the use of computerized data acquisition in a laboratory setting.
- Ability to infuse modern analytical instrumentation (GC, GC-MS, HPLC, AA, FTIR, UV-Vis, NMR) into the chemistry curriculum.
- Experience developing instructional curriculum including laboratory exercises for science & engineering majors and allied health students.
- Ability to apply current learning theory and national science education standards to develop, assess and implement innovative methods of science instruction, including such methods as a cross-disciplinary approach, the use of case studies, active learning, and/or reading apprenticeship in curriculum development.
- Participation in grants, especially grant development and administration.
- Evidence of involvement with outreach activities with middle schools, high schools, transfer institutions, local STEM professionals and the community.
CHARACTERISTICS OF ASSIGNMENT
- Teach lecture and laboratory classes in General Chemistry for science & engineering majors.
- Coordinate and unify lecture and lab materials across all sections in General Chemistry; ensure adequate high quality curriculum and appropriate rigor in Gen Chem I & II.
- Teach other courses in a general chemistry program that include the use of instrumentation, as necessary
- Develop curricula and innovative teaching materials for chemistry courses.
- Participate in Department of Science & Engineering planning and decision-making including preparation and implementation of operational, planning, growth and budgetary strategies.
- Participate in the shared governance process and serve on college committees.
- Assist with articulation of courses with transfer institutions.
- Advise and mentor students in the chemistry program on a broad range of topics including degree requirements, strategies for academic success and career opportunities in chemistry.
- Provide academic assistance to students in the chemistry program outside of normal class hours and demonstrate a willingness to work with and motivate these students, such as club sponsorship, supervision of independent projects and development of workshops to better prepare students for academic success.
