Scion is a Crown Research Institute specialising in research, science and technology development for the forestry industry, wood products and wood-derived materials. We lead new technology development for renewables, bioproducts and energy and the establishment of a broader based bio-economy.
We are looking for scientists who will join us to drive research in developing new functionalised chemicals, polymers, fibres and composites derived from bio-based materials and renewable resources. This is a full-time permanent positions within the “Biopolymers and Chemicals” and “Wood and Fibre” teams in Scion’s Rotorua office.
What are we looking for? We want fundamental research scientists who can design and carry out the synthesis, purification, and characterisation of small molecules, polymers or natural products for use as functional nano-materials, stimuli-responsive materials or biomimicry materials. We want people who are results driven and self-motivated, with a willingness to spend hands-on time in the lab. You will have:
- A PhD in organic chemistry or comparable field of chemistry with three or more years of post-PhD work and/or postdoc experience. A proven track record in the syntheses of performance materials – such as functional nano-materials, stimuli-responsive materials or biomimicry materials would be an advantage A track record of rational design of monomers to achieve defined polymer architectures An ability to correlate monomeric building block structures with observed properties of the produced polymers or materials A high level of creativity and productivity with demonstrated strong synthetic chemistry problem solving and analytical skills. Excellent and demonstrated scientific expertise in modern organic synthesis, and familiarity with the current literature, including a strong working knowledge of organic reactions and mechanisms A broad knowledge of purification techniques for polymers and/or small molecules. Proficiency in the use of methods of instrumental chemical analysis, such as NMR. MS is essential.
