Responsibilities

This position heads up the Department of Chemistry laboratory support operations, working primarily with the faculty coordinators of the instructional laboratory programs (general chemistry coordinator, organic chemistry coordinator, and bio-analytical faculty members) and secondarily with all departmental faculty members in support of the department's research programs. Duties include: preparation and set-up coordination of all academic chemistry labs according to specifications provided by chemistry faculty members; independent supervision of assistant laboratory coordinator and student employees; maintenance and operation of departmental instrumentation according to specifications provided by chemistry faculty members and instrument manufacturers; procurement for academic and research labs according to specifications provided by chemistry faculty members; and processing of chemical waste according to University policy and EPA guidelines.


Qualifications

A bachelor's degree in chemistry or biochemistry from an accredited college/university with two years of instrumentation experience is required OR a master's degree in chemistry or biochemistry from an accredited college/university with some instrumentation experience is required. Master's degree is preferred.

Candidates must have knowledge of chemistry to prepare chemicals for academic labs and experience with chemical instrumentation sufficient to operate and maintain department's instrumentation. Must have computer skills in spreadsheets and word processing to enable processing of data including safety data, waste disposal records, chemical inventories, etc. Must have the ability to read and understand government regulations pertaining to safety and chemical hazards in order to properly manage chemical inventory.
