Environmental Chemist-Staff Fellow
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM), Office of New Animal Drug Evaluation (ONADE), Division of Scientific Support is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Interdisciplinary Scientist. The Division of Scientific Support provides expertise, leadership, and coordination to all CVM offices regarding environmental safety, pharmacology, and biostatistical evaluations for reviews and research. Through our independent and collaborative reviews and evaluations, we support the Center’s scientific and regulatory goals. This position will be filled through FDA’s Staff Fellowship program. Applicants must be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident. The appointment is for up to two years with opportunities for renewal.
As an Interdisciplinary Scientist, you will work on the Environmental Safety Team evaluating environmental introduction, fate, exposure, and effects information and environmental risk assessments developed to demonstrate the environmental safety of new animal drugs under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The Team applies knowledge of environmental toxicology and chemistry, standardized test methods, risk assessment methods and applicable laws and regulations for evaluating the investigational use and approval of new animal drugs. Specifically, you will conduct scientific reviews of environmental chemistry and fate protocols and studies (e.g., physical-chemical property, adsorption and biodegradation in soil and water) and analytical method validation studies. Additional duties include reviews of categorical exclusion claims and environmental assessments submitted by applicants for chemicals to be considered for approval under new animal drug applications, feed/food additive petitions, and other applications. You will use your knowledge and expertise in environmental chemistry and fate to provide recommendations to the Environmental Safety Team and regulated industry. You will also prepare review documentation, environmental assessments, and finding of no significant impacts to support CVM decisions regarding the impact of the substances on the environment.
Applicants should have experience conducting environmental chemistry and fate studies (e.g., physical-chemical properties, leaching/runoff, degradation and/or sorption studies). Applicants should also have experience with analytical methods and instrumentation. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in evaluating environmental chemistry, fate and transport data, writing environmental study evaluations, and conducting, writing, and/or reviewing analytical method validation studies. In addition, although not required, it is desired that applicants have experience in evaluating and preparing environmental risk assessments for drugs, pesticides, or environmental contaminants.
