Postdoctoral Research Associate - Chemical Engineering

University of Massachusetts Amherst

UMass Amherst, located in Amherst, Massachusetts, sits on nearly 1,450 acres in the scenic Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts, 90 miles from Boston and 175 miles from New York City. The campus provides a rich cultural environment in a rural setting close to major urban centers.

Candidates are sought for an immediate postdoctoral opening in the groups of Profs. Sarah Perry and Jessica Schiffman. This position is supported by a robust industrial grant. The initial appointment will be for one year, with expectation for renewal. The position is subject to availability of funds. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

The laboratories of Profs. Perry and Schiffman focus on advanced polymer science, colloid and materials engineering. This specific project involves developing a novel method to regulate uptake and enhance encapsulation and/or delivery of model compounds from polymer-based delivery systems. The project also involves developing new materials, characterizing polymers, measuring release and adhesive performance, correlating properties with polymer structure and reporting results to sponsors and faculty. The position requires mentoring of junior researchers, manuscript and patent preparation and submission of proposals for further work. The laboratories are located across three buildings with state-of-the-art facilities. More information is available at http://www.umass.edu/perry and http://www.umass.edu/schiffman.

Requirements:

Applicants must have a PhD in Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, Materials Science, or related engineering disciplines. Expertise in polymers, materials chemistry, encapsulation, and basic chemical/mechanical characterization is desired. Candidates should be creative, personally motivated, have excellent oral and written communication skills, and be able to work in an interdisciplinary environment. Special consideration will be given to individuals with innovative research ideas and aspirations.

Application Instructions:

To apply, please visit: http://umass.interviewexchange.com/candapply.jsp?JOBID=100051 and include a cover letter, full curriculum vitae, representative publications, and statement of research interests.

Applicants should arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent to Prof. Perry at perrys@engin.umass.edu and Prof. Schiffman at schiffman@ecs.umass.edu. Please include the title “Postdoc_2018” in the subject line.

Review of applications will begin on July 30th, 2018; however, applications will be accepted until the position has been filled. The position is available to start immediately, and the start date is negotiable.
