Washington College, a top private liberal arts and sciences college of about 1,450 undergraduates located in Chestertown, MD, is seeking applications for a tenure-track position in experimental physical chemistry at the assistant professor level, beginning in the Fall of 2019.
Washington College is a vibrant academic community that offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and is accredited by the American Chemical Society. A commitment to undergraduate teaching and scholarly research is essential. A Ph.D. in physical chemistry is required. Prior teaching experience with undergraduates and post-doctoral research experience are desirable. The faculty load consists of three courses per semester or two courses and two laboratory sessions per semester. Washington College has an “Organic First” curriculum and a successful candidate will be expected to teach “Chemical Thermodynamics and Chemical Dynamics,” “Quantum Chemistry and Spectroscopy,” and “Quantitative Chemical Analysis.” The successful candidate will participate in Senior Capstone Experience projects in the Chemistry Department, cultivate an active undergraduate research program, and also be expected to develop in-depth courses related to his/her area of expertise. In-depth course offerings in analytical or polymer chemistry or that contribute to the college’s proposed major in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology are particularly welcomed. Additionally, the candidate is expected to design and teach a first-year seminar on a rotating basis (https://www.washcoll.edu/academics/writing/first-year-seminar/).
Salary is competitive; domestic partner benefits and parental leave are offered. Start-up funds and laboratory space for research will be provided. The college also provides support for scholarly research through paid junior leaves, faculty enhancement funds, conference travel funds, and the Toll Science and Mathematics Fellows Program.
