The long-term NREL vision is to develop enabling tools for targeted biosystems redesign and optimization that will accelerate research enabling the production of renewable fuels and chemicals. We are currently interested in developing a core competency centered around NMR spectroscopy that we have identified as critical to positioning NREL as a leader in the field of bioenergetics. We are looking for candidates that will strengthen our existing abilities to manipulate native genes and metabolic pathways to reroute carbon and energy flux. In addition, the successful candidate will develop novel analytical protocols to fully utilize the current NREL spectroscopic capabilities. The Biosciences Center has new projects that will benefit from utilizing NMR capabilities to increase the understanding of metabolic processes in plants and microbes that precisely identify bottlenecks in these organisms inhibiting the production of valuable bioproducts and fuels. The successful candidate will also develop a strategic vision utilizing current and future NREL NMR resources.
Primary responsibilities are to:
Design and guide scientific research to develop cutting-edge technologies utilizing Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy that will expand the NREL core bioenergetic analytical capabilities. Will lead and direct scientific projects in support of the NREL Biosciences Center and other DOE priorities.
Will apply extensive scientific technical expertise to develop internal and external collaborations related to bioenergetics including fluxomics, metabolomics, and structural biology.
Will guide the successful completion in current projects related to the Center for Bioenergy Innovation (CBI) in addition to leading internally-funded bioenergetic-related projects. Develop a strategic vision utilizing current and future NREL NMR resources.
Will develop technical solutions to complex problems which require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity.
Work will be performed without appreciable direction. Will be responsible for successful completion of milestones related to CBI and the NREL bioenergetic strategic initiative.
Will represent NREL as the prime technical contact on contracts and projects. Will interact with senior external personnel on significant technical matters often requiring coordination between research groups and other NREL organizations.

Required Education, Experience, and Skills
Relevant PhD and 4 or more years of experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 7 or more years of experience. Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 9 or more years of experience. Applies extensive scientific technical expertise, and has full knowledge of other related disciplines. Considered a technical resource. Demonstrates leadership in several areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in management of projects. Excellent technical writing, interpersonal and communication skills.
