Postdoctoral Appointee - Materials Science for Energy Storage
The Nanoscale Sciences Department at Sandia National Labs in NM is seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to conduct electrochemical materials science research and development as a team member of the Joint Center for Energy Storage Research (JCESR). An opportunity exists to explore the relationships between liquid electrolyte structure, electrolyte transport properties and electrolyte reactivity at electrode surfaces.
Typical work assignments include:
- Glove box based synthesize and subsequent property and electrochemical characterization of liquid electrolytes
- Coordination, performance, and/or analysis of materials characterization experiments using electron microscopies (SEM, TEM, cryo-TEM), surface spectroscopy (XPS, ToF-SIMS), spectroscopies (NMR, Raman), electrochemical atomic force microscopy, laboratory-based x-ray tomography, and synchrotron-based x-ray methods
- Contribution to publication and presentation of scientific findings
The Nanoscale Sciences Department conducts collaborative leading-edge research that advances the understanding of materials at the nanoscale and enables the collaborative development of creative solutions for Sandia's broad and evolving National Security and Energy Missions. Our research activities have broad impact; and typically generate peer-reviewed, high-profile journal publications and presentations at professional scientific meetings. Our main research focus is directed along three thrusts:
1. Electrochemical Materials Science and Applications (including energy storage and corrosion)
2. Magnetic, Dielectric and Electronic Materials Science and Applications (including ferroics and composites)
3. Nanostructured Materials Science and Applications (i.e., for hazardous materials capture/storage, sensing, membranes, water treatment, and catalysis)

- PhD, conferred within 5 years prior to employment, in a chemistry, materials science and/or, physics or engineering related field
- Bachelor’s degree in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM)
- Experience in the field of electrochemical-based energy storage
- Experience with electrochemical measurements and instrumentation
- Able to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance
- Experience conducting operando materials characterization in electrochemical cells
- Experience with material characterization with one or more of the following: SEM, TEM, NMR, Raman, AFM, XAS, XRD
- Experience with glove box operations
Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) L-level security clearance.
Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
