What You Will Do
The Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) is a Department of Energy, Office of Science Nanoscale Science Research Center (NSRC) and National User Facility jointly operated by Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories that focuses on cutting-edge nanoscale integration science.
We are seeking an outstanding candidate in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, or related area to conduct world-leading research in defect-driven quantum information science (QIS) as Quantum Material Integration Research Scientist. The successful candidate will work as a key member of a team in development of new technology for ‘soft’ chemical implantation of quantum defects into 1D SWCNTs and 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Efforts will include combining covalent functionalization chemistry approaches for creation of sp3 quantum defects in SWCNTs with scanning probe-enabled lithography tools to achieve deterministic placement of covalent quantum defects. The team will also extend the approach developed for the SWCNTs to TMDs. A strong background in scanning probe based lithography approaches with demonstrated ability in development of new approaches in scanning probe microscopy, lithography and nanomanipulation is required. Candidates accomplished in research of defect-driven quantum information science, 2D TMDs, covalent functionalization of SWCNTs /TMDs, nanomaterial assembly, non-traditional electronic/photonic integration, optoelectronic device development, and single defect/molecules/quantum dot spectroscopy are also highly encouraged to apply. Highly accomplished researchers with no postdoctoral experience will also be considered.
Responsibilities will include:
- Expand CINT experimental capabilities by development of chemical quantum defect implantation capability and non-traditional photonic/electronic defect integration strategies.
- Conduct a vigorous, high-impact, and collaborative program of scientific research and support CINT user science in the area of nanophotonics and optical nanomaterials.
- Contribute to setting new strategic directions for the QIS research and NPON thrust.
- Interact with a broad set of sponsors beyond the Department of Energy, Office of Science who may benefit from CINT advances in areas ranging from national security to applied energy programs.
What You Need
Qualifications We Require:
- PhD in a relevant area of science or engineering.
- Demonstrated record of scientific research achievement (through publications, citations, and presentations) in one or more areas mentioned above.
- Outstanding verbal skills and a record of effective scientific communication.
- Demonstrated ability of working in a research team in development of new experimental capability
Qualifications We Desire:
- Demonstrated successful experience as the lead for proposal development efforts and participation in/and or leadership of research projects of major importance and impact to the scientific community
- Recognized national reputation as evidenced by criteria that may include organization of symposia and workshops and service on national scientific societal committees and review panels.
- Experience developing and cultivating successful scientific collaborations.
- Experience working with or at a national user facility.
- Experience mentoring students and postdocs.
- The ability to obtain a DOE “Q” clearance, which typically requires U.S Citizenship.
- Experience in 3D printing
- Experience in device fabrication and testing
- LabView and/or MathLab programming skills
