The Boston University Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Office is part of the Office of Research, a group dedicated to aiding the research community in navigating the lifecycle of their work, from finding funding to creating proposals to helping inventions find their way to the public. EHS provides leadership in safety, technical guidance, emergency response support, training, and conduct verifications for compliance to regulations, BU policies and best practices for all academic research and teaching laboratories at Boston University (BU) and Boston Medical Center (BMC). The Chemical Safety Program Manager (CSPM) position in the Research Safety Division of EHS reports and works with the Research Safety Director to ensure that activities related to the use of hazardous chemicals in the laboratories are conducted in a safe manner as well as in compliance with pertinent regulations. The CSPM develops, implements, and helps establish policies and procedures, develop tools, and information to help ensure the safety, stewardship and compliance in the management and operation of chemicals in research and teaching laboratories at BU and BMC. This position is eligible for the generous tuition remission at Boston University.

Required Skills

KNOWLEDGE: High level knowledge of chemical theory and chemistry that enables the person in the position to conduct risk assessments and reviews to determine the hazards or potential hazards involved in a laboratory work involving chemicals. Knowledge of standard procedures in laboratory chemistry work; the OSHA Laboratory Standard and other equivalent regulations, laboratory practices, laboratory design, life safety and building safety.

SKILLS: Demonstrated communication skills, both written and verbal. General public speaking to develop and deliver training presentation, and prepare and deliver technical and detailed information such as policies, guidelines, and reports in a variety of written formats in a clear and concise way. Can effectively work in a team group setting and as individual performer.

ABILITIES: Ability to multi-task and prioritization of work responsibilities. Can interact with clients and a wide array of staffs and co-workers diplomatically and in an efficient manner. Can be a part of the emergency response on-call program and respond to help mitigate emergencies.

WORK REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to successfully complete the medical occupational health screening and evaluation; assist and respond to campus safety related emergencies; I-9 Employment eligibility; CORI background check.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE: 3-5 years' experience and Degree in Chemistry. Masters' degree in Chemistry preferred. Laboratory work experience in chemistry and understanding of standard chemistry procedures/processes and equipment use.
