Research Associate Professor
Position Description: The Center for Biotechnology and Genomics (CBG), a multidisciplinary center at Texas Tech University (TTU), seeks a non-tenure-track faculty member with expertise in functional genomics and NextGen sequencing technology to join a dynamic interdisciplinary program at TTU. This position was created to fill a need in the Genomics Core in the Center for Biotechnology and Genomics. We are seeking an outstanding candidate with recognized expertise in genomics to complement existing expertise in this area and enhance the University research priorities in the cross-cutting arenas of genomics, functional genomics and bioinformatics. Responsibilities include individual and team teaching of graduate courses in gene function and analysis as part of the MS in Biotechnology degree program, which are also expected to be of interest to students from other departments across campus. The candidate is expected to mentor graduate students, perform specialized work in the planning, conducting and supervision of original cross-disciplinary research with other University units, secure significant external funding collaboratively, and provide appropriate professional and institutional service. The new faculty hire will have their primary appointment in the CBG and will have an adjunct graduate faculty appointment in another TTU department.
Major/Essential Functions: Key responsibilities include teaching, involvement in externally funded collaborative research, and providing technical support and consultation for genomics data generation and analysis in the Genomics Core. The faculty position will be working closely with multiple CBG partners on research, training and teaching activities and is expected to provide technical support to relevant collaborative entities at the university. The tasks for this position include engaging in academic research, publishing high quality peer reviewed research, writing/submitting research proposals and securing significant collaborative external funds as well as supervising/co-supervising graduate students.
Qualifications: PhD. in Biology/Biochemistry/Bioinformatics or related areas. Preference will be given to candidates with strong training in hands-on technical applications of Next-Generation Sequencing and ‘omics data related to agriculture, nutrition, biochemistry, health/biomedical sciences, and/or related disciplines. The candidate is expected to have postdoctoral training and broad knowledge in biological sciences and genomics, with technical expertise in NGS.
Candidates should have demonstrated leadership and ability to work collaboratively in program development, teaching, training, and providing technical expertise. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere are expected. Candidates should demonstrate ability to integrate resources, policies, and information for the determination of procedures, solutions and other outcomes, ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with other employees and the public, ability to plan workload effectively, providing direct training and supervision as needed. Candidates must exhibit high work ethics consistent with TTU’s and funding agencies conduct for responsible research. Candidates are expected to conduct and participate in research relevant to multiple living systems.
Preferred qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated research independence, track record of publications and funding, and who are actively involved with application of biological and genomics technology and interested in the bioinformatics tool application.
