Two positions are available in the Department of Chemistry at Washington University for ongoing, professional, full-time, teaching-track Lecturers to assist in the instruction of General Chemistry courses and to play an integral role in curriculum development. The successful candidates must have a Ph.D. in chemistry.  Preferably, the successful candidates will also have postdoctoral experience in instruction or research, and a past record of accomplishment in teaching either as graduate-teaching assistants or instructors of chemistry lecture courses at the college level.

The Chemistry Department is initiating a second track of General Chemistry in Fall 2019.  The primary expectation for these Lecturer positions is to work with the General Chemistry lecturers and faculty to develop and teach the course materials for General Chemistry, including syllabi, lecture notes, course-content videos, recitation materials, Peer-Led Team-Learning (PLTL) problem sets, Process-Oriented Guided-Inquiry (POGIL) worksheets, exams, quizzes, and other materials.  As a team, the Lecturers will need to educate advisors on course sequence selection for their advisees, advertise the features of the new course sequence, inform the Chemistry Faculty about the new course sequence, trouble-shoot and adjust throughout the implementation of the new course.  The Lecturers will be responsible for teaching recitation sections, holding regular office hours and help sessions, managing and training of the graduate Assistants in Instruction (AIs), and course administrative duties (e.g. writing quizzes, problem sets, test questions, grading).

The Lecturers are also responsible for promoting the Chemistry Department’s efforts in providing resources to enhance the education of undergraduates in the General Chemistry lecture course sequences. We offer a three-pronged supplemental program to our students:

1. In the General Chemistry Peer-Led Team-Learning (PLTL) program, upper-level undergraduates facilitate weekly study groups of six to eight course registrants who perform group exercises and problem solving as part of the learning experience.  The size of this program is significant – approximately 75% of the students enrolled in General Chemistry participate, and there are 80 - 100 PLTL leaders each semester. 
2. In the General Chemistry Transition Program, invited students participate in extended recitation sections and weekly academic mentoring sessions.  The academic mentoring includes group work, homework exercises, remedial instruction, study-skill training, and academic advising. 
3. In the Residential Peer Mentoring (RPM) Program, the peer mentors hold walk-in hours in the residential halls and are available to assist students in chemistry.  The Chemistry Department provides training to the RPMs and suggests discussion topics and practice problems.
