Under direction of the EH&S Research Safety Unit Manager, the campus Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO) supports the safe use of hazardous chemicals in research. As part of EH&S, the CHO: 

• Serves as the technical expert in identifying chemical hazards, performing risk assessments, and supporting safe work practices within research laboratories 

• Develops and maintains a comprehensive chemical hygiene plan, aids the development of laboratory safety plans, and provides collaborative technical guidance to researchers, staff, students, and administrators 

• Regularly leads projects that involve development & implementation of policies & program development 

• Develops and implements training content, guidelines, policies, and technical documents for the safe use, storage, and disposal of hazardous chemicals in research 

• Within the context of hazardous chemical use in research, supports campus committees such as the Chemical Laboratory Safety Committee (CLSC), Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), and others as needed 

• Problems will be complex and require development and implementation of innovative and novel solutions involving application of professional chemical safety knowledge, skills, and abilities, often in collaboration with researchers, and/or other subject matter experts throughout the UC system 

• Serves as technical leader and a chemical safety subject matter expert in the development/implementation of chemical and laboratory safety programs throughout UC Davis 

• The CHO will interface, on behalf of the campus, with local, state and federal regulatory agencies in matters related to chemical hygiene 

• Reviews new regulatory requirements for applicability to chemical safety, effectively communicates these new requirements, and assesses the impact of new or proposed regulations on laboratory safety resource needs 

 

The CHO will work with the CLSC to make decisions based on interpretation of relevant law, regulations, organizational policy, professional best practices, and relevant science methodology in several disciplinary areas.

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

• Master Degree in: Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Process Safety Engineering, Toxicology, or related field 

• Highly experienced working to promote chemical safety in an academic or industrial research and development environment 

• Supervisory or Managerial experience in research or environmental, health and safety 

• Self-motivated to work independently 

• Advanced knowledge/understanding and experience in identification, evaluation, and control of hazards associated with chemical handling, storage, transportation, use and disposal in a research university or industrial research environment 

• Knowledge of and skill in applying and interpreting applicable local, state, and federal regulations and related standards guidelines on chemical safety and management to recommend, develop and implement policy 

• Knowledge of Cal/OSHA laboratory and chemical safety regulations, hazard communication, general toxicology of chemicals, and occupational exposure limits 

• Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills, including advanced political acumen and skill to effectively communicate with diverse constituencies in a highly political environment 

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

• PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Process Safety Engineering, Toxicology or related field 

• Professional certification (e.g. PE, CIH, CSP, CCHO, CHMM) 

• 24 or 40 hour HazWOPER 

• Project Management skills 

• Knowledge of safe handling of hazardous drugs in veterinary and medical care
