The MIT Department of Chemistry seeks an instructor to develop online resources for general chemistry beginning in the 2019-20 academic year, and to support digital learning within the chemistry department.

Responsibilities will include working closely with chemistry faculty to develop course curricula for residential and global modules leveraging the edX platform. Initially, this work will focus on general chemistry (5.111) but additional modules are contemplated for the future. The instructor will work with educational staff to develop courses that include learning objectives, detailed content outlines, measurable outcomes, interactive activities, engaging video, and thoughtful discussion forums. In doing so, the instructor would at the same time be a Digital Learning Lab fellow, a member of the MIT-wide community of people developing online courses in collaboration with the Office of Digital Learning. See https://openlearning.mit.edu/mit-faculty/mitx-digital-learning-lab.  S/he also be responsible for teaching general chemistry (5.111) in collaboration with MIT faculty. Depending upon the candidate’s qualifications this may involve preparing and delivering lecture, designing problem sets and exams, and/or working with teaching assistants. Some teaching of introductory laboratory classes could also be considered, again depending upon the qualifications of the candidate.

Requirements: a Ph.D. in chemistry, demonstrated excellence in teaching, outstanding organizational and interpersonal skills, expertise in best practices for residential and online teaching, and a strong commitment to undergraduate education. Applications from recent Ph.Ds interested in pursuing careers in undergraduate education are especially welcome.

The ideal starting date for this appointment is no later than August 1, 2019. The appointment is for one year and renewable for a second if mutually agreeable.
